The 20/20 Eye Care Team is proud of the eyecare mission work that our summer Optometry Student took part in this past June, great job Gaby! Read on to hear more about this important vision care project that recently wrapped up and that Gaby was a part of:
From June 15th-25th, Optometry students from the University of Waterloo School of Optometry and Vision Science and the optometry students from the Université de Montréal flew to Ecuador with VOSH International to volunteer eye care services and provide eye exams and glasses to the locals of the cities of Guayaquil and Cuenca. Over 3300 patients were seen by the students as well as international Optometrists and opticians. The locals were provided prescription glasses, sunglasses, and if needed, referrals to local ophthalmologists. It was a humbling experience; as for many students this was their first opportunity to provide eye care services. Similarly, for many patients it was their first encounter with an eye care professional. Everyone's hard work and participation allowed this mission trip to be such a success. It is always amazing to see the impact our profession can have in our local and global communities.
