A Celebration in honour of Dr. Porter's optometry career and retirement from 20/20 Eye Care was held this past summer.
Dr. Elcheshen who founded the practice with Dr. Porter in 2000, gave a speech highlighting some of his many contributions to the profession and patients he cared for. Here are a few excerpts:
Congratulations on 47 years of practice! Don graduated from the School of Optometry at Waterloo in 1970 and has practiced in Manitoba ever since. Don was instrumental in developing the Children's Vision Screening Program in Manitoba schools and played an active role within the Manitoba Association of Optometrists. Don served as MAO President for 3 years, was on numerous MAO committees and volunteered at the Teddy Bear's Picnic for many years. For the past several years, his impact on optometry has spread well beyond Manitoba and even outside Canada with his work on his almost annual trips to deliver eyecare in Mexico and Peru. He has also done interesting work by acting as the go to for the television and film industry for contact lens special effects while shooting in Winnipeg. Don's ability to form great longstanding relationships with his patients who appreciate his sincerity, services and care, has always been very inspiring, as has his knack for forming mutually respectful relationships and friendships with his employees. We know your patients will miss you at the office and we will miss you at the office, but we all wish you the best.
